With the rapid development of the domestic medical industry and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, wheelchairs have become an essential means of transportation for the elderly or disabled. Whether it is an electric wheelchair or a manual wheelchair, the development of the domestic wheelchair industry has now reached its peak. Since it is a mobility tool for the elderly or disabled, its safety and effectiveness should be guaranteed. So, what are the common problems and suggestions for electric wheelchairs? Let's take a look next.

Here is the list of contents.

  • Inhibit driving while charging

  • Motor stall protection

  • Impact strength

  • Double roller fatigue strength

Inhibition of driving while charging

Electric wheelchairs can be driven during charging. If users are not careful to drive the wheelchair during charging, it is easy to cause the power cord to fall off or break due to pulling, resulting in the risk of exposure to live parts. In the registration inspections and supervisory spot checks in recent years, the problem of being unable to inhibit driving during charging was more common. It is recommended that companies set the controller program to inhibit driving during charging before leaving the factory. In addition, if the electric wheelchair is equipped with two charging connectors, it must be ensured that neither party can drive the wheelchair while the charging connector is charging.

Motor stall protection

The electric wheelchair may come into contact with a high edge, such as a rock on a high side, while driving and its drive motor will stall. At this point, the drive motor will heat up due to excessive current. Long-term overheating can cause permanent damage and can even endanger the life of the operator. During testing, it is common that power wheelchairs are not equipped with appropriate overcurrent protection devices, resulting in overheating of the motor and controller and smoke from the battery cables during testing. 5.6.7 of GB/T 12996-2012 requires that wheelchairs should have protection measures to prevent overheating or permanent damage to the motor. It is recommended that power wheelchair manufacturers configure overcurrent protection devices on the external circuit of the controller or battery, which can automatically disconnect the circuit when the current is too high, thus ensuring the safety of the user.

Impact strength

Electric wheelchairs are inevitably subject to various sudden shocks during use. The impact strength test is the ability of the wheelchair parts to be impacted. Impact strength refers to the impact of a pendulum with a specified mass on the wheelchair vehicle during use, just like the impact on the backrest and the impact of obstacles on the hand ring, casters, and pedals when the user is sitting on the power wheelchair. After impact strength tests, the most problematic were the loosening and deformation of the casters and damage to the footrests. It is recommended that manufacturers should give due consideration to the impact resistance of these components when selecting casters and footrests.

Double-roller fatigue strength

The double-roller fatigue test is a 200,000-times crash test of a power wheelchair on a double-roller tester under the maximum safe load conditions claimed by the supplier. During the test, the most likely failure is the deformation and fracture of the electric wheelchair crossbar. Since the crossbar is the main load-bearing part of the wheelchair, if the inner diameter and wall thickness of the crossbar are too small and too thin, it is easy to fracture under an environment of high strength and multiple jumps. For the above-unqualified phenomenon, wheelchair manufacturers can improve from the following two points. First, try to choose a crossbar with thick tube walls to enhance the support strength.
