The rules of wheelchair rugby are a combination of basketball, rugby and ice hockey. Each team can have a maximum of 12 players. Each team can have no more than 4 players on the field at any one time, and the combined total of the 4 players on the field cannot exceed 8 points.
Kickoff: At the start of play, the referee throws the ball into the middle circle of the playing area. The umpire should throw the ball vertically up between the two opponents and the ball should be higher than either player can reach. The ball must not land before two touches, otherwise the ball must fall from the start. The other team members must always remain in their corresponding positions outside the center circle.
In the official game of wheelchair rugby, each game is divided into four eight-minute quarters, with a one-minute break after the first and third quarters. Take a 5 minute break after the second quarter. In the event of a tie, a 3-minute overtime period will be imposed. Each team has 4 timeout opportunities per game and 1 timeout opportunity in overtime. Each timeout is 1 minute.
Similar to the 3-second zone in basketball, wheelchair football has a free throw zone along the baseline. The defending team can have three players in the box, while the attacking team cannot be in the box for more than 10 seconds. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins. 1 point is awarded in a play as long as the offensive player controls the ball and both wheelchairs pass the goal line in the defender's end zone.
During the game, a player can put the ball in his lap and push the wheelchair around. He can also pass the ball directly to a teammate. However, players must pass or dribble the ball within 10 seconds. Must pass or dribble the ball across the halfway line within 15 seconds of going from back to front. Once the ball passes through the middle, it cannot be returned to the back.
In a game, the ball should be served from the sideline or goal line after a score, foul, timeout, or interruption of play. Offensive fouls must disallow the ball and the defending player must be called off the field for 1 minute (the offending player must remain in the box). If the opponent scores, the penalty kick will be completed early. When a player has the ball and is in scoring position and an opponent has committed a foul, the referee has the authority to award 1 point to the attacking team and the firefighter will be released for 1 minute.
