Ancient

The oldest record of a wheelchair in China, archaeologists found a wheelchair pattern on a sarcophagus around 1600 BC.

The earliest record in Europe is a wheelbarrow in the Middle Ages (required to be pushed by others, closer to contemporary nursing wheelchairs)

In the world-recognized history of wheelchairs, the earliest record is that the sculpture of a wheel chair on a sarcophagus in the Southern and Northern Dynasties (Yuan 525) is also the predecessor of modern wheelchairs. (Bottom left picture)

In the 16th century AD, during the Renaissance, King Philip II of Spain had a stroke and rode in a wooden wheelchair.

Modern times

Around the 18th century, wheelchairs with a modern design appeared. It consists of two large wooden front wheels and a single small wheel at the back, with a chair with armrests in the middle.

Progress brought about by war

In the American Civil War, rattan light wheelchairs with metal wheels appeared.

After World War I, the wheelchair used by the wounded and injured in the United States weighed about 50 pounds. The United Kingdom developed a hand-cranked three-wheeled wheelchair, and soon added a power drive to it.

Folding wheelchair

In 1932 AD, a paraplegic person named Hebert Everest and his friend Harry Jennings (Henry J) invented the first modern foldable wheelchair and founded the E&J company.

At that time, the E&J wheelchair frame was made up of aviation metal pipes with canvas seats.

War to sports

In the latter part of World War II, the United States began to allocate a large number of E&J wheelchairs made of 18-inch chrome steel to the wounded. When fashion does not have a wheelchair size needs to be different from person to person.

After the Second World War, Sir Ludwig Guttmann (SL Guttmann) of the United Kingdom began to use wheelchair sports as a rehabilitation tool, and achieved good results in his hospital. Inspired by this, he organized the [British Disabled Veterans Games] in 1948. It became an international competition in 1952.

Sports competition

In 1960, the first handicapped games and the Olympics were held in Rome, the same place.

In the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the term "Handicapped Olympics" appeared for the first time.

In 1975, Bob Hall became the first person to complete a marathon in a wheelchair.

With the demands of competition, the design of wheelchairs has developed towards emphasizing its functionality, comfort, durability and cool appearance.
